Ethical dilemma:

Redundancies & confidential information

March 2004

The company for which you are working is about to be restructured. Everyone knows that there will be some redundancies. You work for the director of human resources and have access to confidential information about the restructure, including the names of those scheduled to be made redundant.

One day at lunch, a colleague mentions that her boss is about to take on a heavy debt in order buy a new house. It seems that he needs the space as his wife is due to have a third child in a few months’ time.

You recognise the name as someone who has been identified to be made redundant.

Ethical questions:

  • What are the issues?
  • Who are the stakeholders?
  • What should you do?
  • What would you do?
