Ethical dilemma:

Lying for a colleague

November 2007

A colleague with whom you have worked for the past three years, asks you to cover for him for an hour or two after business hours when you will be working overtime.

In particular, he asks that if his wife should telephone to speak with him, then you should tell her that he is caught up in a late meeting and that you will pass the message on to him when he is free.

Ethical questions:

  • What are the issues?
  • Who are the stakeholders?
  • What should you do?
  • What would you do?
