The Value of Love

How do you balance physical and emotional needs for a patient?

You are a spinal injury nurse working in the community. One of your patients is a young woman who has been cared for by her grandmother since her accident ten years ago. Recently you have seen evidence that some aspects of her care are being neglected. You have talked to the grandmother about your concerns and told her that her granddaughter will have to be hospitalised if things don’t improve.

The young woman always gets very depressed when she has to go to hospital and this affects her physical condition. You know that her grandmother is getting older and won’t be around forever, but the young woman has no one else who can care for her.

Do you overlook the decline in standards?
