I need to write an essay about an ethical dilemma that I have encountered at any point in my life. Could some people give me some feedback on whether or not this is an ethical dilemma.
So my grandma has a problem with prescription medication. Not just pain killers, but pretty much anything that comes from a pharmacy. It's been a problem for years but no one in the family can really do much about it. A couple years ago she started to act really strange and having some really weird hallucinogenic thoughts.

I found some prescription amphetamine based diet pills in her bathroom. The Dr. that wrote the script of some doctor that doesn't even exist. She also gets calls from some people with Indian accents from a pharmacy. When I was helping her clean out some stuff in her house I found a letter that was from some government agency saying that her shipment had been confiscated because illegal material in it, or something that was illegal to send. One of our relatives that lived with her for a while said that some packages from India with these pills in it had came to the house.

So we all knew that she was taking pills she wasn't suppose to and where she was getting them from but we were not quite sure how to handle it. Every person in the past who has tried to help her she completely shuns them from her life, even her own daughter. Then just keeps doing what she was doing. Our relative that was living with her that had found the pills tried to help her out and she made up some excuse to kick him out of the house.

I am really the only person left in the family that goes and sees her and that she trusts. I know she has a problem and needs to see a doctor. In addition to the prescription med problem we also think she may be schizophrenic or have some other type of mental illness. So clearly she needs help. But I was faced with the decision of trying to help her and risk having any relationship with her, vs. just letting her do as she pleases and not have her shun me from her life. I just to just let her be and try to maintain a relationship with her and help her out with the things that I can.

Is deciding to help or not help a family member (or any other person) an ethical issue? What things should when consider when trying to decide what to do?

Are family members moral obligated to try to help other family members when they know there is a problem?

Are people morally obligated to help other people when they know there is a problem? How is it different with family members?

1.)Yes, it is an ethical issue but in your issue helping her by just letting her do as she pleases is not really helping her. You can ask Government Officials who is helping cases like this. Ask your nearest welfare services.
2.)Yes, but if you really can't do anything for good ask advice and help to people around you.
3.)Yes, because all of us is one even we are in different races and religions. Their is nothing in particular about being a family member or not but it is a reality check to help first your family members than others.

Hi! aarus87,

I just want to say to you that helping is within you as an intellectual human being.Just make sure in every step you take in helping other people even a family member is to make sure that it will be for his/her own good.

Yes I agree, helping them in this case is really not acceptable.
