Post subject: C.S.Lewis's view of this world. (Not Narnia etc)

I have just read several of C.S.Lewis's books for the first time. Not the Narnia Chronicals which I have read many times, but Perelandra, Mere Christianity, The Problem of Pain and others.

He was quite an interesting person and thought deeply about many issues in life. He lived an interesting life too. Some Christians use his books to support Christianity and he certainly was a deeply religious man, especially in his latter years.

Yet he lived his life according to his own rules, some of which were not really reflected in his philosophical arguements.

Was C.S.Lewis an ethical man
:?:

Your post has made me curious about CS Lewis' books.
Up to now I had the impression that his books were full of hob goblins and Harry Potter like antics and I don't go for that kind of thing.
Its refreshing to find an author with something to say, but its hard to find one, if like me, you don't have a grounding in literature.

Did you read C. S. Lewis' excellent book "The Abolition of Man"? It has a very interesting table, at the end, showing the overlap between ethical precepts in different cultures around the world.

I haven't read "The Abolition of Man". I am working my way through my local library's collection. The local library being at 280 Pitt Street, Sydney. The Sydney Mechanics School of Arts, which is another interesting institution. I will definitely make an effort to read it, but I want to read his "The Screwtape Letters" first.

It is interesting to note that a contemporary of his was J.R.R.Tolkien of "Lord of the Rings" fame. He and many others met over a pint or five and discussed literature for some years. This sounds a good exercise and one that is hard to find today I think.

C.S.Lewis held strong views on many subjects and had the best interest of people (or at least men, his views on women were not so charitable I think) in mind. I admire that, and understand and agree with many of his sentiments, but not all of course. We live in a different time ... now there is an interesting question, do ethics change over time?

What people believe is right and wrong changes over time so yes, I guess ethics changes over time also. One of the best examples of the last 500 years is slavery. Commonly believed to be perfectly fine and now believed to be evil.
