Debate continues on whether the London Olympics will be able to live up to its mantra of "the most ethical Olympics ever".

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world ... 44013.html

Do claims of "sweatshop" labour conditions tarnish the ethical branding of the Olympics? Or could these inequities be perceived as standard business operating environments?

We would welcome your thoughts on the forum.

Sadly, the sweatshop conditions described in the article do represent "standard operating procedure" in the global sportswear industry.

If the London Olympics is to present itself as particularly ethical, hoiwever, it must distinguish itself from this poor standard. LOCOG and the IOC have claimed London will be home to the "most ethical Olympics yet" and "deliver a lasting legacy". On the evidence available, this seems unlikely.

LOCOG has gained great publicity from signing on to the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) Base Code. This code sets out minimum standards for workers including a living wage, no forced overtime and freedom of association. Workers manufacturing Olympic merchandise are a long way from enjoying this minimum standard.

I believe the bigger ethical issue is the apparent black market selling of tickets by varoius olympic officials/agencies.
