Do you think business ethics is important?

Definitely.

Why or why not?

Ethics is important in all facets of home and family; self and community; community and business; community and authorities; community and the law etc.
Without ethics we have survival of the strongest or mob rule. Dictatorship even.

What can we learn about ethics from the recent financial crisis in the USA?

That when there is a lack of ethics they may think they can do as they like but will have to pay the ferryman eventually. Or get dumped midstream :D

I think ethics is important and my goal was to never to anything I was ashamed to tell my children.

I think a problem much bigger than ethics, or lack of ethics, in business is the blatant lack of ethics in politics. They were the source of our financial problems.

Is there a standard baseline of accepted business ethics that people in business would agree with and adhere to? Who articulates what are acceptable business ethics, enforces and polices these? Where are business ethics derived from? How are they developed?

In the lead up to the financial crisis in the US, was there a conflict with ethics in business and the concept of conducting or carrying on a business?

Is self or external regulation the best way to ensure ethics in business?

We'd welcome your thoughts about business ethics.

Yes its very important...Business ethics is a form of applied ethics or professional ethics that examines ethical principles and moral or ethical problems that arise in a business environment. It applies to all aspects of business conduct and is relevant to the conduct of individuals and entire organizations.

If a company does not adhere to business ethics and breaks the laws, they usually end up being fined. Many companies have broken anti-trust, ethical and environmental laws and received fines worth millions. The problem is that the amount of money these companies are making outweighs the fines applied. Billion dollar profits blind the companies to their lack of business ethics, and the dollar sign wins.

A business may be a multi-million seller, but does it use good business ethics and do people care? There are popular soft drinks and fast food restaurants that have been fined time and time again for unethical behavior. Business ethics should eliminate exploitation, from the sweat shop children who are making sneakers to the coffee serving staff that is being ripped off in wages. Business ethics can be applied to everything from the trees cut down to make the paper that a business sells to the ramifications of importing coffee from certain countries.

In the end, it may be up to the public to make sure that a company adheres to correct business ethics. If the company is making large amounts of money, they may not wish to pay too close attention to their ethical behavior. There are many companies that pride themselves in their correct business ethics, but in this competitive world, they are becoming very few and far between.

Running a business requires adequate consideration to a number of issues outside the traditional scope of making money, of which ethics is most certainly one. As our business grows and becomes more significant, we impact on the lives and circumstances of people in ways we can only imagine - through bringing jobs, creating wealth and inspiring others to grow their businesses. An important part of engaging in this process is understanding your business ethics, which if not up to scratch can leave you with a bad reputation and can even ruin your business, not to mention alienating employees, suppliers and the local community.

Well, of course. Ethics are important for any business to grow and to earn a reputation. Until an ethical behavior is followed by us, progress is of no importance. In fact these days trainings are going on regarding How to follow an ethical management system in a business.

I believe business ethics are vital to the functioning of business and society.

For a business to be trusted it needs to act in a way that is responsible for all stakeholders (customers, staff, shareholders, suppliers, community, environment etc) without them the business wouldn't exist. Good corporate ethics allows both the business to flourish due to the good will and advertising it generates from doing good for society and allows them to give something to society.

Business has to exist within a culture, and has to be held accountable for how it acts and what it does. Being a employer and stimulating the economy does not make poor culture or behaviour to be acceptable.

The behavior of the financial institutions in the US was not so much unethical unrestrained win at all costs mentality that is being driven by the greed of institutions and investors who have come to believe that there is no end to how much money is available to be made.

The unethical respect was in enticing and convincing people who they knew were on the knife edge of the financial cliff and the oversold American Dream. Facts are people need a place to live and raise a family, and if the money elite are not wiling to build rental units and maintain them properly then those who are caught in the middle are forced by circumstance to make poor decisions.

The financial crisis came when those holding the reins began to lose faith in there own make believe stories of never ending pots of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Do you think business ethics is important?
--yes!
business ethics concerns about the code of values and principles that govern the actions of a person, or a group of people, regarding what is right versus what is wrong..A business cannot be any more or less ethical than the people who run it and who work for it. Unethical behaviour or a lack of corporate social responsibility, by comparison, may damage a firm's reputation and make it less appealing to stakeholders. Profits could fall as a result.
