Govt has a tendency to take things too far, however when it comes to protection, of innocence, children and the vulnerable, a basic premise for the existence of govt and founding principle of the law, it stands to reason govt should be more involved than is current. The general skills of analysis and research of people in the govt could greatly assist in reducing existing risks.
At the moment it's a bit of an open playground, there are surely certain typical scenario's and patterns which would emerge on analysis, and security measures which could be put in place such as registered IP addresses and verifying ID checks for social networking sites.. which could close off a large part of the current risk.
