FAQs - Supporting the Ethics Centre
Learn more about supporting our work.
As a not-for-profit organisation, St James Ethics Centre is funded primarily by membership, along with other financial and in-kind support from indivduals and organisations.
The Ethics Centre also generates income by way of its ethics-related services, including its Ethics Consulting and Training work, undertaking speaking engagements and other activities.
St James Ethics Centre relies entirely upon funding from indivduals and organisations in order to work towards realising its vision:
We seek to bring about a world in which people feel free to include the ethical dimension in their daily lives.
The Ethics Centre works with individuals and organisations to live an 'examined life' and make ethical decisions, which can be of critical significance in many ways.

In many cases, a decision to join or continue to be a member of any organisation is based on an assessment of the benefits of membership. Unusually, perhaps, St James Ethics Centre offers little more than an opportunity to help make the world a better place.
We do make two promises to those who join us.
First, we will continue to do our very best to realise our vision:
We seek to bring about a world in which people feel free to include the ethical dimension in their daily lives.
Second, we will offer as many member benefits as our limited resources allow. So, the more members, the greater our capacity to extend our range of services.
Learn more about the current benefits of membership, which include a subscription to our quarterly newsletter, Living Ethics.
You can use the form on our membership page to pay securely online. Alternatively you may prefer to download a PDF application form, which can also be faxed or posted to the Ethics Centre.
Once your application has been received by the Centre, your payment will be processed and you will receive your username and password for the website.
Your application is then forwarded to two Board members for signature. Once the paperwork is returned to the Ethics Centre a letter of confirmation of membership is sent out from Dr Simon Longstaff. This process can take up to three weeks.
Yes, however, because of the Australian Privacy Act, the Ethics Centre is unable to answer queries from any third party regarding an individual membership.
Also note that membership of the Ethics Centre does not give an indication as to whether or not that person is ethical, but simply that they support the work of the Ethics Centre.
Your membership will be valid for twelve months, which includes a suite of publications and early notice, discounts and special offers for Ethics Centre and partner events. We will remind you when your membership falls due.

Yes. Learn how to donate and become a member online and offline. And of course we greatly appreciate such support.
No. This is because a membership is a payment to join the organisation, while a donation is covered by our Public Benevolent Institution status and is therefore tax deductible for anyone in Australia if it is AU$2.00 or over.
While all members must agree to the model rules (PDF) of the organisation (as with any association) and be formally approved by our Board, St James Ethics Centre does not and cannot make any judgements as to whether or not its members are ethical or have behaved ethically in any given situation.
Membership of the Ethics Centre should instead be seen simply as an indication that the person is generally supportive the work of the Centre.
No. As a non-member you can still make use of the resources on this website.
